Reading University Music Socs

UoR Music regularly collaborates with the following Reading University Music socs:

  • RUMS – Reading University Music Society
  • Reading Uni Band Society
  • Reading Rock Society
  • Reading Singer-Songwriters Society

In conjunction, with these thriving music societies, we will be hosting multiple events throughout the academic year. To find out more about these societies please read on!

RUMS:

RUMS offer a wide range of musical ensembles led by students, suitable for players and singers of all standards. They also run termly concerts to show off what they have been doing in rehearsals!

Their ensembles are always welcoming new members who simply enjoy making music in a fun and friendly environment, so if you want to join or simply want to find out more get in touch.

JAZZ BAND

Ensemble Leader: Emily Griffen

RUMS Jazz Band is a welcoming group for musicians of all abilities! We play a wide variety of Jazz, including standards, funk and more, and we’re always open to suggestions! Our rehearsals are always relaxed and enjoyable, and we also like to encourage people to challenge themselves with Jazz skills such as improvisation. We hope to see you at our rehearsals!

RUMS CHOIR

Ensemble Leader: Emma Winterbottom

RUMS Choir is a friendly choir open to all abilities, singing a range of music such as pop music and songs from musicals. Recent songs include ‘I’ll stand by You’ and ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana. Join us for what is promised to be a relaxed and enjoyable environment!

STRING ENSEMBLE

Ensemble Leader: Sasha Hill

RUMS String Ensemble is a group of string players of mixed ability, who play a variety of music from classical to all the well-known favourites from musicals and films. So come along and try it out, it would be great to see some new faces!

CONCERT BAND

Ensemble Leader: Joseph Young

RUMS Concert Band offers a great environment to meet other student musicians and play fun concert band music from film themes to (the dreaded) Tequila. We welcome all abilities and a wide range of instruments. If that’s not enough to get you to come along we also have a cake break in the middle of rehearsals and, much like the other ensembles, make sure to spend time to socialise after we finish practising.

BRASS BAND

Ensemble Leader: Thomas Bush

RUMS Brass Band is a group of friendly brass players who pay music both for small brass ensembles and also classic brass banding music. We’re friendly and accepting of people from all brass instruments and abilities and there’s room for everyone. We rehearse every week in term time and are always welcoming new members!

Rock Society:

Rock Soc is a social society with a vibrant membership both on campus and in town. Our members enjoy a wide range of alternative music, including classic rock, metal, goth, punk, industrial/EBM, grunge, pop punk, indie and lots more. We host a range of socials throughout the year such as different alternative nights in town, day trips and overnight stays! Venues include Purple Turtle, Sub89, Facebar, and many more. We also collaborate with UoR Music to get our rock society members displaying their talents in Live Music shows.

Our committee this year are a great bunch of people, who are delighted to be running the society. We want to see lots of new freshers this coming academic year, and your first chance to meet us will be at the Freshers Fayre, so come say hi at our stall.

We hope to welcome you with opportunities to share your love for music and train your creative side, anything from open mics to jam sessions and more! We will be offering in-person socials as well as song-writing sessions for everyone to enjoy – it doesn’t matter if you don’t play any instruments or haven’t written a song before, we’re all here to have fun.
