The act of fasting itself is an opportunity for individuals to understand and reflect the pain and suffering of millions around the globe who live in poverty and for the participant to feel grateful for all they have.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Muslims all around the world are preparing for the holy month. They do this by offering voluntary fasts to get their body used to going without food for a period of time, read Qur\u2019an, donate to charity etc. The Islamic Calendar is based around the lunar cycle and so Ramadan rotates by about 10 days each year. During Ramadan, we have a meal called Suhoor which we eat before dawn to sustain us through the day. We then have our sunset meal called Iftar.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 17th February and end on Wednesday 18th March. NB dates may vary depending on moon sighting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How might Ramadan affect our students?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramadan is a time for spiritual growth and a sense of connection to community and identity. Common greetings include \u2018Ramadan Mubarak\u2019 and \u2018Ramadan Kareem\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signpost quiet\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Diversity-and-Inclusion\/Religious-and-spiritual-care\/Prayer-facilities\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Diversity-and-Inclusion\/Religious-and-spiritual-care\/Prayer-facilities\">prayer spaces<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Diversity-and-Inclusion\/Religious-and-spiritual-care\/The-Muslim-Centre\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/essentials\/Diversity-and-Inclusion\/Religious-and-spiritual-care\/The-Muslim-Centre\">The Muslim Centre<\/a> on Whiteknights campus. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow short rest breaks during long or intensive contact hours where possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid evening scheduling or work loading where possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the availability of Yuja learning capture recordings and other asynchronous modes of learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider offering flexibility in assessment where possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask your students privately or anonymously what support is needed or appreciated. Tutoring body has published a guide&nbsp;containing sensitivity and inclusivity strategies to help higher education institutions support Muslim students and staff during Ramadan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/radar.brookes.ac.uk\/radar\/items\/1e50afa2-c8e7-4e3d-91db-1670472089ce\/1\/\">Creating an inclusive approach to teaching and learning during Ramadan&nbsp;<\/a>(Oxford Brookes University) \u2013 Motivated by a lack of guidance for educators, this evidence\u2011based guide advises UK educators on creating inclusive teaching and learning environments for students during Ramadan.&nbsp;Advice includes acknowledging Ramadan, raising awareness, and offering asynchronous learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onvero.org.uk\/resource\/hubs\/lgbtq-hub\/\">Onvero<\/a>&nbsp;(previously known as Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion) \u2013 provides staff with a host of online equity, diversity and inclusion training, events and resources externally.&nbsp;Colleagues just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onvero.org.uk\/membership-join\/\">register for access<\/a>&nbsp;using their University of Reading email address, set a password and log in.
